Cocker Spaniel puppies are an iconic breed!

Cocker Spaniel puppies are a friendly and gentle breed of dogs. They are loved by families throughout the United States. Many celebrities and presidents fancy them, such as Oprah Winfrey and her famous Cocker named Solomon. There are many reasons why they are so loved.  We are shedding some light on Cocker Spaniel puppies that you’ll find beneficial and informative.

Physical Characteristics and Grooming

The full grown Cocker Spaniel puppy typically weighs between 23 to 30 pounds. Their heights range from 13 inches to 16 inches. Cocker Spaniels have a long, wavy coat that sheds throughout the year. They require regular grooming, whether it’s done by you or a professional, which most opt to do.  Their hair will grow and mat if not combed, brushed, and trimmed routinely.

History of the Cocker Spaniel

Cocker Spaniel puppies come from Spain. They were bred as early as the 1400’s as hunting dogs. The Cocker Spaniel is also referred to as the American Cocker Spaniel, which comes from the English Cocker Spaniel. The word “cocker” comes from the woodcock, a game bird the dogs flushed out for hunters. During the 17th century, a variety of Spaniel breeds began to emerge in Western Europe. The Cocker Spaniel Club was formed in 1902 and its aim was to promote the welfare of the Cocker and to encourage breeders to breed their puppies to a common standard.

Although they look similar, English and American Cocker Spaniels are recognized by the American Kennel Club as two separate breeds. In the 19th century, American and English breeders began to focus on different traits. American Cocker Spaniel puppies tend to be smaller, with rounder heads. The English Cocker Spaniel puppy has less distinct eyebrows and longer snouts. Eventually, the two dogs were different enough to warrant a separation of the breed in 1945. The smallest member of the American Kennel Club Sporting Group is the Cocker Spaniel. American Cocker Spaniel’s talents are hunting, tracking, retrieving, watchdog, agility, and competitive obedience.

Temperament in the home

Your Cocker Spaniel puppy is intelligent, trusting, and the perfect pet companion. She is highly trainable, especially with treats and praise. She is sensitive and early socialization is necessary.  She’s really friendly with strangers, but a little timid during the initial meeting. Cocker Spaniel puppies get along well with other pets, especially if they are raised together. They do, however, suffer separation anxiety if left alone for long periods of time. They love to stay busy, so long physical activities are great.
