Max von Stephanitz is considered to be the father of the German Shepherd breed. In 1899, breeder Max von Stephanitz, noticed a wolf-like dog with black and yellow markings, during a dog show in West Germany.

He was impressed by the dog’s intelligence and discipline, that he purchased one and started the German Shepherd Dog Club. He created the standards and guidelines for the breed and coined their motto called “utility and intelligence.”
