Once You Find A Puppy for You, It’s Housebreaking and Teething Time!

October 4, 2017

Looking to find a puppy to complete your household means that you have to know the basics of housebreaking and teething training!

It may seem like a difficult task for those who aren’t used to training a new puppy or haven’t trained in a long time. But here at Furry Babies, we want to make sure you’re completely prepared when you take home one of our baby puppies! So, we’ve got some training basics that will help you on your way to become happy pet owners. All you need to do is follow along with our blog on what to do when bringing home your new furry family member.

Crate training is the way to go!

Crate training or confinement training has been around for many years. It is a way of housebreaking that plays to a dog’s natural instincts for feeling safe and secure in a small, “den-like” space. It is not a negative training tool, nor is it harsh on the puppy. Being able to confine the puppy will not only give them a sense of security, but also work with their instincts not to potty where they sleep, as not to attract predators in the wild. Also, crate training is really the safest way to train the puppy, as they cannot get into things that they shouldn’t if you’re not able to watch them.

Remember to be consistent!

The number one rule of housebreaking, and all training aspects, is to be consistent! Write out a routine for the puppy for walks, playtime and feeding so the entire family knows the schedule and there are less chances for accidents in the house. Don’t let new puppies do anything you wouldn’t want them to do as adults, like jump on guests, sleep on the furniture or chew on shoes. Also, make sure everyone is using the same commands for training, such as “go potty”. Being consistent will assure that your puppy’s housebreaking and teething training will go by swiftly and easily!

Positive vs. negative training tools

Training using negative reinforcement is a thing of the past! Rubbing the puppy’s nose in an accidental pee puddle will not help train them any faster, nor will it help strengthen the bond between owner and pet. Instead, upon finding an “oops poop” in the house, try and take the puppy outside immediately and be positive. When the puppy has a successful potty in an appropriate area, use a positive training tool, like saying “good boy/girl” in a high, sing-song voice or giving treats. You’ll find that using positive reinforcement will give you much better results in the long run!

There’s a lot more training tips where these come from! When you find a puppy at Furry Babies, you are not only getting a wonderful breed, but also help in every aspect of pet ownership!
