The Labrador Retriever has been America’s absolute favorite companion for many years, find out why!
Friendly, loving and very playful, the Labrador Retriever has become one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Historically, this large “sporting” breed has been used to hunt and retrieve birds and only recently has the dog become known as a companion dog. The Retriever is highly regarded for its pleasant temperament, easy trainability, and intelligence. Here at Furry Babies, we love when people come in asking about our Lab puppies for sale, they are one of our favorite baby puppies to send home!
History of the Labrador Retriever
The Labrador hails from Newfoundland, not Labrador as the name suggests. Though both of these places are in Eastern Canada. Though no one is quite sure where this popular breed originated, it is confirmed that it’s earliest breed ancestors were bred primarily for hunting.
Personality and training
The breed is well known for its kindly, outgoing nature. The Lab is eager to please and loves being around people and other animals. Despite being a large breed, Labradors are gentle around children and seniors. Labs are also very intelligent, if a little headstrong, and usual take to training quickly, especially with the help of treats!
Interesting things about Labs
Labrador Retrievers are powerful swimmers and take to the water very well, a sign of their breeding past. They also have webbed toes and are outfitted with a water-resistant coat that keeps them warm in the wintertime. Because Lab never meet a stranger, they don’t tend to make for good watchdogs, this is perhaps the only thing they aren’t excellent at!
